Groove shark is an online music streaming site founded by three students from University of Florida.

What type of music does this station play? We grade the range of music; the genres covered - country, rock, hip hop, RnB, pop, classical and world. We also checked out whether their playlist spanned popular, old and new songs. .

Type in your choice songs!

You make your own playlist by searching for songs and then streaming them at your leisure. This site surprised us by coming up with obscure artists and old tracks.

The downside is you need to type in your own song choices or look at popular playlists. Grooveshark doesn’t have the ‘searchability’ of other stations and is not great for making new discoveries. In addition there are a few incorrectly labeled songs uploaded.

How easy is it to navigate around the site? Can you find the band or song you are looking for? We graded sites for ease of use..

The navigation for the search box is very good. It quickly lists tracks from the artist you have chosen and provides a substantive back catalog for you to choose from.

The only thing we missed was a recommendation function – you have to search for specifics and are not tempted with music in the same genre or by other similar artists.

However, all in all, this site is a great way to locate music from different eras and genres, quickly and easily and build up your own personalized playlist.

Why is this site different to other radio sites? This grades the originality and innovation of the site. .

Grooveshark promotes their main benefit as being the ability for listeners to access their entire music library from anywhere online. But most would probably disagree and say that the best thing about the site is the ability to listen to other people’s uploaded music.

It is simple enough to create and share playlists and the vault of music on offer is an almost bottomless pit of global sounds. We do however, feel it needs far better introduction and explanation – you just enter the site and are left to your own devices and need to scratch around before you find your feet and understand what to do.

How interactive is this site? Is there a Facebook Group, Twitter, forum, newsletter or chat room? Is there a fans area where you can you upload pictures and messages? We found out..

You can share your playlists with your friends using Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon or directly by the URL. There is also a Grooveshark Forum although, disappointingly, this appears to be mainly technical and help-based as opposed to having a music and social interaction function.
